“I hear that.”
“My house is just down the next street.”
Mac could hear the tone of angst in Hunter’s voice. Normally people referred to their house as a home but perhaps Taylor had been enough of a part of his home life that Hunter was unsure of what to do or how to be alone. While Hunter’s breathing was ragged, Mac didn’t think it had anything to do with his injuries. As he eyed the bank of homes, he shook his head amazed at the architecture and manicured landscaping. Not only were they beautiful and rich in modern design but the area was surrounded by tropical trees and evergreens. “Beautiful.”
“I haven’t spent enough time paying any damn attention. I suppose I’ll have that now. It’s the driveway there.”
Mac craned his neck “Wow.” The ultra modern contemporary was accented with shades of the surroundings reminiscent of Danish styles he’d only seen in the pages of a magazine. Florida Design popped into his mind.
“I was lucky to get it.”
“I can see why.” He turned onto the expansive aggregate driveway and slowly drove up the banking hill. Mac scanned the perimeter and could easily tell Hunter employed a gardener. As he place the gear into park, he left the engine running. “Can I at least help you inside and take a look at the notes? I’ll really help I think in flushing this freak out.”
“I…sure. Not like I have some burning evening ahead of me. Come in and have a drink. I can’t hide behind this any longer. What the hell is there to hide anyway? The whole world knows about my sordid life.” Grabbing the door handle Hunter grunted as he swung open the door and snagged the small plastic bag of his belongings. He climbed out of the car and stood, his legs shaking.
Mac cut the engine and grabbed his keys. There was something about being with Hunter that was both thrilling and touching. He stole a glance in the rear view mirror and could easily see his own pain reflecting in his haunted eyes. He couldn’t help but think how interesting Karma was. Climbing out of the car he followed Hunter as the man slowly made his way to the front door.
Hunter glanced to the side as if staring at an empty parking space and sighed before unlocking the door. “Make yourself at home. I’m going to put my things in my room.”
Mac waited until Hunter was halfway up the inside stairs before lifting the front doormat. The bag was exactly where Taylor said it would be. Snagging the folded plastic, he opened it and peered inside, debating on whether or not he should simply hand it to the police. While he figured the paper probably had already been too contaminated to get any decent fingerprints, he maneuvered the piece until he could read at least a few words of the obvious threat.
